Amazon’s policy against Cannabidiol (CBD) products
It is important to first understand Amazon’s policy on CBD oil. According to Amazon’s policies, agreement and guidelines; under the restricted products section:
“Listings for products containing cannabidiol (CBD) are prohibited, including but not limited to:
- Full spectrum hemp oil
- Rich hemp oil
- Products that have been identified as containing CBD”
However, if you type in “CBD oil” on Amazon, you’ll get plenty of search results. Are these products actually CBD oil?
Hemp Seed Oil Same As CBD Oil?
Though CBD products are prohibited to be sold on Amazon, hemp products are not. It appears that most sellers list their products as “hemp seed oil” or “hemp oil” on Amazon.
Hemp seed oil and CBD oil are two very different oils. The former, hemp seed oil, is derived from the seeds which contains little to almost no CBD. Hemp seed oil is often used for cooking and is healthy and nutritious. Whereas, CBD oil is made through the stems, leaves, stalks or flower of the hemp plant. These are the parts of the hemp plant where CBD can actually be found.
It’s common practice for Amazon sellers to write and label their products as “hemp seed oil” or “hemp oil” with the intention of selling CBD oil to benefit from countless of consumers visiting Amazon on a daily basis. The truth is, genuine CBD extract is more expensive than hemp seed oil. If you’re seeking the benefits* of CBD, buying hemp seed oil on Amazon will not give you the equivalent effect or benefit found in genuine CBD oil.
In some cases, Amazon sellers will write that their products contain “hemp extract”, delicately implying that their products contain cannabinoids, such as CBD, to justify a higher price tag compared to hemp seed oil. This may prompt some Amazon buyers to spend more money on an oil containing “hemp extract” without having any information as to how much CBD is in the actual tincture.
Manufacturing Considerations When Buying CBD on Amazon
When purchasing CBD oil, it is important for the buyer to look for third-party lab reports because the market is still not regulated. It is up to the brands to be transparent and show that their products are safe and are high quality. The lab test report will show the actual CBD content, proving what you’re buying is not hemp seed oil.
A reputable online seller can give you more information about their CBD product, such as where the hemp was grown, the extraction method, and if the product is pure CBD. In addition, a buyer can reach out to a brand directly to find out any additional information, something that isn’t always possible on Amazon.
Buying CBD oil on Amazon poses a risk because there’s no definite way to know how much CBD is in the actual product. Without access to proper information, there’s no way of knowing if the “hemp oil” products on Amazon might contain leftover chemical solvents from the manufacturer’s extraction process.
